Measuring a cable for a joint resin kit

Short answer
Measure the cable outside diameter accurately with a calliper or a diameter tape at a round, undamaged section. Record the number of cores and the conductor cross-section (mm²), the joint type (straight, branch or repair), the operating voltage, whether it is above or below ground, and the certificate or mine specification the joint has to meet.
A cable-joint resin kit is selected almost entirely from measurements. Get these right and the kit arrives ready to use.
Measure
- Outside diameter — with a calliper or diameter (pi) tape, at a round, undamaged section. Take two readings at 90° and use the larger.
- Number of cores — 3-core, 3-core + earth, 4-core, screened, etc.
- Conductor size — cross-sectional area in mm² of each conductor
- Armour / screen — type and whether it is being reinstated through the joint
Define the joint
- Straight joint, branch (tee) joint, or a repair over damaged sheath
- Operating voltage
- Above ground or below ground
- Expected mechanical and environmental exposure
State the compliance requirement
Underground and many surface mine specifications call up a specific approval for cable joints. State the certificate, the mine specification clause and the approved joint procedure so the supplied system and documentation match what your site will accept.
What to send
The measurements above, a photo of the cable end and the damage, and the compliance requirement. The supplier then selects the mould by outside diameter and the resin pack by joint volume, with the matching tape, release agent and bonding agent.
