Cable-joint resin for African mining operations — selection & supply

Short answer
Select the resin cable-jointing system by the cable type and number of cores, the conductor size, the accurately measured cable outside diameter, and whether it is a straight joint, branch joint or repair. For remote and cross-border operations, a compact two-part polyurethane resin that cures in about ten minutes keeps a trailing-cable repair to a single shift.
A trailing or reticulation cable that fails underground or on a mobile machine stops production until it is jointed. A two-part casting resin makes that joint on site — and for an operation a long way from a supplier, the resin system you choose has to be quick to apply, forgiving in the field, and able to sit on a shelf until it is needed.
What a resin cable joint is
The conductors are connected mechanically, the joint area is taped and a mould is fitted around it. A two-part polyurethane resin is mixed and poured into the mould; it sets into a solid, flexible block that seals and mechanically protects the joint. The Bosworth Flexable Resin Cable Joint is supplied in a sealed foil pack for mixing, with the mould and consumables matched to the cable.
Selecting the mould and pack
Selection is driven by the cable, not the voltage:
- Cable type, number of cores and conductor size
- The cable outside diameter, measured accurately
- Straight joint, branch joint or repair configuration
- Any required certificate, mine specification and environmental exposure
The moulds cover conductor ranges from about 1.5 mm² to 25–35 mm² and cable outside diameters from roughly 6 mm to 50 mm; larger combinations are chosen by outside diameter and resin volume. See measuring a cable for a joint resin kit for the method.
Why it suits remote and cross-border operations
- Fast cure — pours at ±20 °C, starts to cure in about 10 minutes, mould off in 30–45 minutes, so the cable is back in service the same shift.
- Compact and robust — a foil pack and a mould freight easily and survive a rough trip to site.
- Shelf-stable — 12 months unopened, stored 15–25 °C out of direct sunlight, so a stock can be held at a remote store.
- Colour-coded — available in green, yellow and red for phase or circuit identification.
The MASC flammability test
MASC — Mining and Surface Certification, a SANAS-accredited test lab — tested the resin to the flammability requirements of SANS 1520-1 (2022) Ed 2.1 and the samples tested complied (MASC report 26-4548). It is a flammability test on the samples submitted, for use in South Africa. It is not a voltage rating and not a company-wide approval — the operating voltage and mine specification are confirmed against the exact cable and joint.
